Muga Reserva 2016
Bodegas Muga 75cl Red ABV 14%
Various suppliers £18 – £21
Muga is one of the most traditional and respectable bodegas in Rioja. It is based in Haro and the wine is aged in oak barrels – they even have their own cooper.
The 2016 Reserva is something of a classic. It has spent 36 months in oak with further aging in the bottle. The main grape is tempranillo, but with the addition of mazuelo, graciano and garnacha. It will last for years, but is ready for drinking now and is probably too much of a temptation to resist.
Black cherry red with an excellent structure from the oak, the flavour is of blackberries with a hint of vanilla and spice. A long, pleasing aftertaste.
It is recommended to be paired with red meats, especially lamb, and Iberian pork.
