Baron Amarillo Spanish Red Blend 2016

Spanish Red Blend 2016
Bodegas Paniza 75cl  Red  ABV 13.5%

Aldi £5.99

I decided to pop into a recently-opened local Aldi to see what they had to offer. It turns out that Baron Amarillo is Aldi’s own brand. Now, I think if I were going to design a label, I could come up with a better name than the Yellow Baron, but it does look quite good on the bottle (if you ignore the fact that the gothic font makes it look like Bacon). Anyway, a look at their website tells you they have a range, right up to Rioja Reserva, but all they had in stock was this one and a Monastrell which proved something of a disappointment – nothing wrong with it, just not very exciting. This one, however, turned out to be really rather good.

Whilst being a D.O.P. Cariñena, the grape variety is specified as “Blend”.  A look at the back label tells you that it has been bottled by Bodegas Paniza in Zaragoza.

Medium-bodied with some dark fruit and vanilla, it is well balanced with reasonable depth and length of finish.

It is recommended to be paired with roasted vegetables, game and lamb.
