Manzanilla ‘En Rama’ 2021
Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana 75cl ABV 15%
Various suppliers £15.95 – £17.95
I have been fortunate enough to drink manzanilla sherry in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where it is produced, as well as various other places in Spain and at home, but this example is positively stunning.
Family-owned Bodegas Hidalgo was founded in 1792 and is famous for its La Gitana (“The Gypsy”) Manzanilla sherry. The En Rama is produced from 100% Palomino free-run juice, bottled directly from the barrel. It is un-fined and only lightly filtered, the closest thing to sampling the sherry at the bodega. Only 35 casks are selected for En Rama and it is matured for an extra two years in the solera system, so supplies are quite limited.
Well-balanced and complex, it has an incredible salty taste due to the proximity of Sanlúcar to the sea – not like salty food, but more akin to breathing in a good lungful of sea air. Bone dry on the palate, crisp, fresh and invigorating.
Served chilled as an apéritif, it also pairs well with seafood, salads, ham and olives.
Value for Money: Very Good
